30 Year Anniversary Celebration at Lagoon

On September 15th, SCI’s Utah offices enjoyed their bi-annual Lagoon Day with their families. The weather was hot and mostly sunny – a little warm for mid-September in Utah – somewhere around 90°. We were treated to ride passes and a barbeque style lunch for each employee and his/her immediate family or 1 special guest. However, “old” kids, those over 18 (years not months) had to be paid for by the employee parent.
This year we celebrated the 30th Anniversary of SCI. Craig and Debbie were given commemorative desk plaques for their courage, dedication, and down-right back-breaking hard work building this company. Other service awards went to: Matt Thomas, Shane Simpson, and Julio Puente in Utah, and Jose Munguia and Francisco Magana in Arizona for 5 years: Jace Bonnesen, Mindy Roberts, Kent Squire (aka Red Dog) and Becky Bowman, all in Utah, for 10 years; Jeff Garr and Juno Martinez, Utah, for 15 years; and – DRUM ROLL PLEASE --Kyle Whitaker and Debra Sorensen for 20 years. Debbie Sorensen has been with SCI since the beginning but was "officially" hired in the computer system on April 9th, 1987, when she insisted that if she was going to do all this work for the company that she wanted her own paycheck. GO DEBBIE!!
Instead of our usual vendor presents, SCI presented each employee and 1 adult guest with an anniversary T-shirt to wear to the event. Kids were each given an SCI flying disc (can’t call ‘em Frisbees, that’s a trademarked name).
Except for a few of us who, for various reasons, chose not to go on rides, everyone appeared to be having a great time being turned upside-down and round-and-round. LaRee Herrick (A/P UT) got drenched on the Rattlesnake Rapids to her 5-year-old grandson’s utter delight.
I heard that Eric Yorgason (Estimator UT) brought beer and bear hugs which he freely dispensed to those who met the age and SCI requirements. What really amazed me is that he kept all that he had consumed through the Catapult ride; a little ride that sends people from the ground up to 250’ in the air like a rock out of a slingshot. This ride is definitely NOT for the faint of heart.
As you can see, there were rides for all sizes and ages and degrees of bravery. The other ride photos are from Lagoon’s website, but this one shows some SCI future employees enjoying the pint-sized rollercoaster, Puff the Magic Dragon.
All the tales I heard of this day were laughter- and fun-filled, so I think we can safely say that this was one Happy Anniversary Celebration!
